any advice for a first-time promoter?

Sure… Are you running a party? If so, here are my key tips that I’ve learnt
1) Start Small, the smaller the better
2) Don’t try and compete, if there are people already doing stuff like what you plan, you’ll never beat them - find your own niche.
3) Lights and music aren’t enough - make your night an experience for those attending, think outside the norm, this will grab attention.
4) Aim to just cover costs to begin with - even potentially go backwards financially on the first few nights, build a following, do free guestlist, get people through the door. Make your money back later. Word of mouth via people who went and had a great night is worth it’s weight in flyers ;)
5) Learn the lessons from failure - first event I ever ran I lost 4k on. And I learnt 10x more 10x faster than any “events management” course could have taught me.
6) Get a team onboard - hosts, DJs, Friends… Get anyone who is keen onboard with your night. And reward them well, pay them, give them ownership of the event/responsibilities.
7) Don’t waste money on 1/4 ads in street press. Full page, or don’t bother. In fact, think very hard about street press in general. It’s dead.
8) Have FUN!
